the house

Here's the house that we are trying to buy. I know it looks like it's in the country (with all the trees) but it's one block off Mass. St. and only a few blocks from both Kirk's office and Lawrence High School (where I work).

As soon as we get in I'll post interior pictures...we're going to do some work in the kitchen and eventually the bathroom; they're outdated.

Ultra darling! I'm jealous of the freestandingness of it all!! Don't you love home improvement? I spent 2 hours at home depot on Sunday just looking at everything.

Have you ever tried painting kitchen cabinets? The cabinets in the house are pretty sturdy, just not super cute. Wondered if you had any tips?

Kitchen cabinets - mom painted mine. I know the best thing is to take all the door and hardware off and set those up in a garage or something and paint them out there. Then paint the cabinets prior to reinstalling the doors.

we read an article in This Old House Magazine that said to use this chemical varnish stripper, then sand, then paint, then lightly sand with a a fine grade paper in between coats of paint...this just seems like a lot of steps. wondered if anyone had done it with fewer steps successfully.

I have asked my mom to leave you a note to let you know the steps she uses.

If it were me and I went to all the trouble to strip them, I'd probably just stain them after that. But that process sounds about right, a lot of steps, isn't it?! I've painted doors and millwork and that also has a lot of steps...I usually skip some of them and then it never looks as good as I had hoped it would. So my annoying advice to you would be to do all the blasted steps.
